Projects 2023 - 2024
On 14th November, 2022 during water and gender day at COP27, Water for Women announced it would be extended to strengthen climate-resilient inclusive water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) for Asian and Pacific communities.
From 2023 to 2024 the Australian government will invest a further AUD41 million[1] to support climate-resilient, inclusive and sustainable WASH services and systems, and safeguard water security across 16 Asia Pacific countries.
Water for Women is partnering with eight civil society organisations to continue implementing 15 WASH projects with the aim of improving the delivery of climate-resilient inclusive WASH, while seven research projects will address knowledge and practice gaps for climate-resilient, inclusive WASH.

1. Building Climate-Resilient WASH for Climate-Impacted Vulnerable Populations (India) |
Partnering with Centre for Advocacy and Research to support climate-resilient, gender responsive and socially inclusive WASH services in 215 informal settlements of Bhubaneswar and Jaipur, reaching an estimated 74,420* people.

2. Leveraging Inclusive and Climate-Sensitive WASH for Empowerment – LIFE II (Pakistan) |
Partnering with International Rescue Committee and partners to improve coordination and collaboration between communities, duty bearers and governments for climate-resilient inclusive WASH services, reaching an estimated 123,980* people.

3. Towards Climate-Resilient Inclusive WASH Services in Rural Bhutan |
Partnering with SNV Netherlands Development Organisation and partners to establish links between improved WASH services and water security and contribute to accelerating progress in rural WASH through strengthening adaptive capacities of stakeholders and communities to achieve quality at scale with equity, reaching an estimated 88,246* people.

4. Towards Climate-Resilient Inclusive WASH Services in Rural Nepal |
Partnering with SNV Netherlands Development Organisation and partners to support adaptation and strengthen resilience within current area-wide rural water supply services with four Rural Municipalities in two districts in Nepal. This project is contributing to improved health, gender equality and well-being of rural municipalities in Nepal through climate-resilient inclusive WASH services and broader water security by 2024, reaching an estimated 41,200* people.

Pacific
8. Climate Adaptive and Inclusive WASH in Solomon Islands |
Partnering with Plan International and Live and Learn Environmental Education in Solomon Islands to strengthen coordination between climate, WASH, health, education and administrative divisions across national, provincial and local governments, to improve technical approaches to identifying and assessing climate vulnerabilities and risks and evidence-based approaches for climate-resilient WASH practices and management for schools, healthcare facilities and communities, reaching an estimated 5,249* people. |
9. WaSH Em i Bikpela Samting (WASH is important) |
Partnering with the PNG WASH Consortium, WaSH Em Bikpela Samting (WEBS) — comprising World Vision, WaterAid, Plan International, Live and Learn Environmental Education and local partners — to address the impacts of climate change on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) systems and build a strong enabling environment for climate-resilient inclusive services in Central, Morobe and New Ireland provinces, the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, and the National Capital District. |
9. Strongim WASH Kominiti Projek (Papua New Guinea) |
Partnering with WaterAid and partners to accelerate momentum with core government and local partners in Wewak district to continue improving and refining approaches to public sector coordination, planning, monitoring, financing and delivery of inclusive WASH services, reaching an estimated 15,178* people. This project is also focusing on climate resilience and the threats climate change represents to strong WASH systems, services and livelihoods.

9. WASH Voices for Empowerment Phase 2 (Papua New Guinea) |
Partnering with World Vision and partners to support improved health, gender equality and well-being in South and Middle Fly through climate-resilient and inclusive WASH services, reaching an estimated 30,000* people. This project is building on the productive relationships formed with the Middle Fly District Government, providing support to rollout climate-resilient inclusive WASH policy and service delivery and to integrate climate resilience into WASH planning and implementation.

9. Inclusive Climate-Resilient WASH in the Islands Region of Papua New Guinea |
Partnering with Plan International and Live and Learn Environmental Education in Papua New Guinea to work with government stakeholders and community actors in New Ireland Province and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville to support climate-resilient WASH, improve health and well-being and strengthen gender equality, reaching an estimated 8,380* people.

10. Inclusive Climate-Resilient WASH in Vanuatu |
Partnering with World Vision and partners to improve climate-resilient WASH for at-risk community members by promoting systems strengthening, new learning and use of evidence at national and subnational levels, with community-wide WASH improvements that adapt for climate change and extreme weather events and consider the needs of women and marginalised groups, reaching an estimated 22,600* people.

South East Asia
11. Climate-Resilient Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Scale-Up Program (Cambodia) |
Partnering with iDE to improve the health, gender equality and well-being of Cambodian communities through climate-resilient, inclusive WASH services, reaching an estimated 19,906* people. This project is also supporting mainstreaming of climate resilience into sanitation marketing and the Cambodian Government's Open Defecation Free activities in rural Cambodia.

11. Community-Led Inclusive Climate Resilient (CLICR) WASH (Cambodia) |
Partnering with Thrive Networks/East Meets West and partners in Cambodia to integrate climate change adaptation knowledge and practical actions for resilient and inclusive WASH in the climate-vulnerable provinces of Kampong Cham, Kampong Chhnang, Kratie, Prey Veng, Pursat and Tboung Khmum, reaching an estimated 27,507* people.

13. Climate-Resilient and Inclusive WASH (Indonesia) |
Partnering with Yayasan Plan International Indonesia and partners to support governments and community members in dealing with climate change-related issues and challenges to establish climate-resilient and inclusive WASH systems and services in the provinces of Nusa Tenggara Timur and Nusa Tenggara Barat, reaching an estimated 223,088* people.

14. Towards Climate-Resilient Inclusive WASH Services in Rural Lao PDR |
Partnering with SNV Netherlands Development Organisation and partners to meet the challenges of climate change and assist governments deliver on basic human rights for their people through meaningful and scalable interventions for climate-resilient adaption processes, reaching an estimated 230,035* people.

16. Strengthening Connections for Equality, Resilience, Adaptation and Sustainability of WASH (Timor-Leste) |
Partnering with WaterAid and partners to deliver Haforsa Ligasaun ba Igualidade, Resiliensia, Adaptasaun no Sustentabilidade ba BESI (HALIRAS BESI), building on collaborative, inclusive and climate-resilient approaches to address the challenges of climate change and improve the operation and maintenance of rural WASH services in Manufahi and Liquiçá, reaching an estimated 18,615* people. This project is also supporting actors from other municipalities to understand, adapt, and trial these approaches further.

Projects 2018 - 2022
From 2018 through to December 2022, Water for Women partnered with 10 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to deliver 20 WASH Projects in 15 countries in Asia and the Pacific. Over the course of this phase of the Fund, Water for Women supported over 3 million people.

Partnering with the Centre for Advocacy and Research (CFAR) in reaching some of India’s most at risk people through Mobilising, Facilitating and Replicating Socially Inclusive WASH Initiatives in India’s Urban Slums.

1. Enhancing Private Sector Engagement in WASH in India |
Partnering with Research Triangle Institute Global India (RTI India) to enhance private sector participation in WASH, increase access to WASH and create WASH livelihoods.
This project came to a close in December 2022.

2. Leveraging Inclusive WASH for Empowerment - LIFE (Pakistan) |
Partnering with International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Leveraging Inclusive WASH for Empowerment (LIFE) to provide inclusive and sustainable WASH services to an estimated 168,750 people and improved governance systems in three districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan.

3. Beyond the Finish Line: Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene for All (Bhutan) |
Partnering with SNV Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV) in delivery of Beyond the Finish Line - Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene for All in Bhutan to provide equitable, universal access to safely managed sanitation and hygiene for more than 214,500 people.

4. Beyond the Finish Line: Inclusive and Sustainable Rural Water Supply Services in Nepal |
Partnering with SNV Netherlands Development Organisation to deliver Beyond the Finish Line - Inclusive and Sustainable Rural Water Supply Services to improve health, gender equality and social inclusion, and wellbeing, reaching an estimated 82,600 people and 30 institutions in rural communities in Nepal.

5. SHOMOTA - Strengthening Gender Equality and Social Inclusion in WASH in Bangladesh |
Partnering with World Vision Australia in the delivery of SHOMOTA - Strengthening Gender Equality and Social Inclusion in WASH in Bangladesh to reach over 232,000 people in schools and communities in Jamalpur, Gaibandha, and Sathkhira districts of Bangladesh.
This project came to a close in December 2022.

7. Strengthening Community Resilience and Inclusion Through Improved WASH services in Fiji |
Partnering with Habitat for Humanity in Strengthening community resilience and inclusion through improved WASH services in Fiji, reaching over 5,400 people in 18 remote and rural communities across Ra and Ba Provinces.
This project came to a close in December 2022.

8. New Times, New Targets: Supporting Solomon Islands Government WASH Transition and Resilient WASH for All |
Partnering with Plan International Australia in the delivery of “New Times, New Targets”, designed to improve WASH services, access and practice in 60 rural communities, 8 health clinics and 22 schools of western Guadalcanal Province in the Solomon Islands.

Partnering with WaterAid in delivering Inclusive WASH for Wewak, benefitting thousands of people in the Wewak district of East Sepik Province in Papua New Guinea.

WASH Voices for Empowerment (WAVE) Partnering with World Vision Australia in the delivery of WASH Voices for Empowerment (WAVE) to improve access to gender and socially inclusive, sustainable WASH for 40,000 people in Western Province, Papua New Guinea.

8. PNG WASH Consortium – WaSH Em i Bikpela Samting |
Water for Women’s Papua New Guinea WASH Consortium, WaSH Em i Bikpela Samting (WEBS), comprises four civil society organisations – World Vision, WaterAid, Plan International Australia and Live and Learn Environmental Education. 'WaSH Em i Bikpela Samting' translates from Tok Pisin to English as, ‘WASH is important.’

Partnering with World Vision Australia in the delivery of Laetem Dak Kona: Gender-Equitable and Disability-Accessible WASH to people in Sanma and Torba provinces of Vanuatu.

11. Cambodia Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Scale-Up Program 2.0 (WASH-SUP2) |
Partnering with International Development Enterprises (iDE) to deliver WASH-SUP2 – Cambodia Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Scale Up Program 2.0 - improved WASH services in six provinces of Cambodia.

11. Women-Led Output Based Aid (WOBA) in Cambodia |
Partnering with Thrive Networks / East Meets West to deliver Women Led Output Based Aid (WOBA) to households of the poorest and most vulnerable in 23 districts across nine provinces of Cambodia.

12. The Myanmar Humanitarian WASH Project |
Partnering with WaterAid to improve WASH access in vulnerable communities and community-managed schools in Myanmar, reaching over 22,700 vulnerable and marginalised people.
This project came to a close in December 2022.

13. WASH and Beyond – Transforming Lives in Eastern Indonesia |
Partnering with Plan International Australia to benefit over 574,000 people, including the most marginalised within communities, by delivering Wash and Beyond – Transforming Lives in Eastern Indonesia.

14. Beyond the Finish Line: Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene for All (Lao PDR) |
Partnering with SNV Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV) in delivery of Beyond the Finish Line - Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene for All to improve the health, gender equality and social inclusion and wellbeing of 212,400 people in Lao PDR.

Partnering with WaterAid in delivering Beyond Inclusion: Realising Gender Transformational Change and Sustainable WASH Systems in Timor-Leste to address the multiple dimensions of inequality in access to services, reaching over 61,000 people.

Research Projects
Research is an important element of Water for Women. The Water for Women Fund aims to raise the bar in terms of gender and socially inclusive research, analysis, design and program delivery in WASH, and in doing so, to lead practice globally.
