COVID-19 Inclusive Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Checklist

Title text on teal background graphic

The COVID-19 Inclusive WASH Checklist was developed by reviewing and merging existing human rights frameworks and inclusive WASH checklists. Developed by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, it is designed for practitioners and aims to support the inclusion of people with disabilities, older adults and caregivers in COVID-19 WASH interventions and can be applied when planning, designing, monitoring and evaluating WASH programmes.

This checklist can be used to assess the extent to which core concepts of human rights for people with disabilities and older adults are considered in WASH programmes and COVID-19 response programmes, as well as the quality of any commitments made. To do this, a reviewer would:

  1. Read a programme document and identify when a suggested activity, guiding principle and core concept of human rights is referenced against disability and / or ageing.

  2. Assign a quality of commitment score to each reference: 0=Red= concept not mentioned; 1=Orange=concept only mentioned; 2=Yellow=concept mentioned and explained; 3=Green=specific policy actions identified to address the concept; 4=Cyan=intention to monitor concept was expressed

  3. Complete the COVID Inclusive WASH Checklist with this information

Translating disability inclusive WASH policies into practice: lessons from Cambodia and Bangladesh

Policy and strategy

Knowledge and Learning is central to Water for Women. It is a key priority of all partners and positions the Fund as an important contributor to global knowledge development and sharing in the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector. Fund generated evidence, centred on innovative, climate-resilient and gender and socially inclusive WASH, supports partners to program for long-term impact. It also provides the basis to influence sector-wide development policy and practice globally, particularly around these cross-cutting themes.

Continual reflection, collaborative learning, knowledge development and exchange are important elements of Water for Women, which combined with effective programming, support partners to lead practice globally and raise the bar on climate-resilient, gender and socially inclusive WASH research, analysis, design and program delivery.

In the first phase of Water for Women (2018-2022), our civil society organisation and research partners developed and shared a wealth of resources through their projects. You can explore a selection of these resource highlights here, and how they link to the building blocks for climate-resilient WASH, drawn from our report, Knowledge and Practice Gaps in Climate Resilient Inclusive WASH.
